Huub Schilte and Jacqueline Portielje work
and live together in Rotterdam. They met in
1975, and both decided to study art. Schilte
became an architectural designer, Portielje
graduated in painting. After moving into
separate studios in the same building in 1985,
Schilte went ahead and chose to be an artist,
starting to design huge murals. Portielje
combined photography and the medium of
painting.
From the get-go, they inspired each other
and intensively dived into each other‘s
process. In 1993, they started to explore the
many possibilities of the computer as artist
medium. They use it as „digital darkroom“,
but also Asa tool for drawing and painting.
Their ideas about art complement each other in a way that they collaborate more often than not. Therefore, their body of
work is presented as Schilte &Portielje since 1997.
